Mbita, Kenya

Mbita is a small fishing town located on a peninsula along the shores of Lake Victoria in western Kenya.  The area is covered in rolling hills and surrounded by many islands in the lake.  During rainy season, when the grass and trees are a bright lush green, the area resembles Maui!  Here you can find some of the world's best mango, papaya and passion fruit.

And... the sunsets are unbeatable!

Mbita facts:
- Located on a peninsula, Mbita enjoys daily sunrises and sunsets over the lake.
- 50 miles south of the equator
- The area is largely comprised of the Luo tribe.
- Fishing is the largest industry, yet, nearly all large fish, Nile Perch and Tilapia, are exported out of the district and therefore too expensive to be purchased by the local inhabitants.
- Fishing for omena (small fish) takes place at night using lanterns and Lake Victoria becomes "a city on the lake."
- Mbita District has one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates,  30%, in all of Sub-Saharan Africa, outside of South Africa.
- Only 213 households have electricity
- Common livestock are goats, chickens, cows and donkeys
- Year-round temperatures only fluctuate approximately 20 deg F

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will I will make you fishers of men."  At once they left their nets and followed him. Matthew 4:19-20
